Genealogical Software - Other Software

In addition to some of the more specialized software, I use text editors, word processors, spreadsheets, databases, photo editors, and a myriad of other programs. Here are a couple of areas I'd like to mention.

PDF Readers

Often documents on the Web are in PDF format, such as some of the documents I've made available on this site. To read them, you'll need a reader such as Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader. Both contain browser plugins so you can read documents online or save them to your computer to read later. Personally, I recommend the Foxit Reader. It seems to have a smaller footprint and is less prone to hanging up.

OpenOffice

OpenOffice is an open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose.
