Youth Dies In Accident

Lake County's traffic fatalities rose to 13 Tuesday afternoon when a motorcycle driven by Harland K. Romig collided with a train.

The accident occurred at the Fairport, Painesville and Eastern railroad crossing on Bowhall Road in Painesville Township. Mr. Romig was southbound on Bowhall Road when his 1962 Triumph motorcycle struck the power unit of the westbound train, according to Ohio State Patrol.

Crossing signals were operating and engineer Frank Solosi, 33 Lee Road, Painesville, gave sufficient siren warning, according to Lake County Sheriff's deputies. Mr. Romig was pronounced dead on arrival at Lake County Memorial Hospital. He died of multiple skull fractures.

Mr. Romig lived with his mother, Sophie, at 513 S. State St. in Painesville. He was 23 years old.

Born Feb. 4, 1942, in Chardon, Mr. Romig lived in Thompson until 1951 when he came to Painesville. He was employed as an operating engineer by IRC Fibers Division, Midland-Ross Corp. in Painesville Township.

As a youth, he was active in Scouting. He graduated from Harvey High School in 1961. Mr. Romig was a member of First Baptist Church of Painesville, the Operating Engineers Union and Young Mens Christian Association.

Surviving besides his mother are three brothers. Raymond G. of Concord, Andrew F. of Painesville Township, Allan D. of Painesville; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Putka of Painesville. His father, Otto, preceded him in death March 8, 1964.

Services will be 2 p. m. Firday at Spear Funeral Home in Painesville with Rev. Robert Hughes of First Baptist Church in Painesville officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
