Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Warren Wed 50 Years Ago in Dakota Blizzard
Marriage vows were exchanged by Miss Ethel M. Benedict and Oliver B. Warren, 50 years ago in a sod house on the farm of the bride's parents in Temvik, N. D. while a blizzard raged outside.
To commemorate the event, an open house was held Christmas Day at the present home of the golden wedding anniversary couple at 17 Mill St.
Hosts and hostesses were the couple's sons, daughters and their wives and husbands respectively. They are Mr. and Mrs. Hervey R. Warren, Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Warren, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton A. Warren, Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Pettit, Mr. and Mrs. Harold F. Warren and Mr. and Mrs. Steve Popp.
A Christmas motif was used to decorate the home for the occasion. Light refreshments were served and Mrs. Lydia Chase of Bismark, [sic] N. D. presided at the coffee table.
Mr. and Mrs. Warren were presented with gifts from their children. Mr. Warren's gift was gold watch while Mrs. Warren received occasional chair of gold material. The grandchildren presented them with a telephone bench.
Attending the open house were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Jackman of Driscoll, N. D., Mrs. Lydia Chase, Bismark, [sic] N. D., Mrs. Lloyd Akins and children, Kathy, Barbara and Dennis of Honey Grove, Tex., Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Smith, Geneva, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ossman and children, Vicki, Kenneth, Peggy, and Paula of Westfield, N. Y., Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Romig and son, Richard of Madison, Mr. and Mrs. Hervey A. Warren and children, Michael and Anthony, Fairport, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Metnor, Eastlake, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Warren, Mrs. Leona Folk and son, David, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Case and daughter, Sue.
Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Smith and son, Raymond, and L. M. Montgomery, Mrs. Mabel Thompson and son, Kenneth, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Simmons and family, Eugene Abbot, Mrs. Esther Saunders, Mrs. Alice Pierce, Mrs. Eleanor Ames, A. B. Mrs. Warren was born in Olivet, Dakota Territory on July 24, 1885 while her husband was born Feb. 28, 1883 in Delmont six years before that part of the Dakota Territory became the state of South Dakota.
Rev. Jason Wood, Methodist pastor, officiated at the original wedding which was witnessed by her brothers Herb and Leon and sisters Maud and Mabel. Mrs. Raymond Jackman, formerly Maud Benedict, is the only member of the wedding party who was present at the golden wedding celebration. Dinner after the wedding 50 years ago was held at the home of the bride's parents.
The couple considers its recipe for married happiness "A common interest in raising a large family." TheiTheir children are Hervey R. Warren, 121 Pearl St., Frank E. Warren, 524 S. State St., Mrs. Frank Pettit, 66 Nelmar Dr., Clinton A. Warren, Painesville-Ravenna Rd., Harold F. Warren, Madison, and Mrs. Steve Popp, Grand River. They have two foster daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Akin of Honey Grove, Tex. and Pauline Sweet of Painesville Township Park. They have 16 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
For the past 27 years, Mr. and Mrs. Warren have resided in their present home. Other residences were Temvik and Linton, N. D. where Mr. Warren worked on a ranch, Delmont, S. D. where he was a rural mail carrier, and Huston, S. D. where he had a homestead and Omaha, Neb. where he worked for the Cadillac Co.
Mr. Warren attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, S. D. and is presently employed as a sandblaster at the Loveland Memorial. His hobbies are gardening, acrobatic work, wire walking and magic.
Mrs. Warren taught school in South Dakota before her marriage. She is interested in church work and helping others. A member of the First Baptist Church, the golden wedding bride is a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women's Association.
